Kroon Hall has transformed a brownfield site that provided little ecological or social benefit into a place where the Yale community can enjoy a healthy outdoor environment and connect with nature and one another in the midst of its urban campus setting. Kroon hall's tall, narrow shape and east-west orientation reinforce the active and passive strategies used to heat and cool it. The lowest floor is set into a hillside, with only its south side exposed, providing thermal insulation and increasing the amount of natural light that enters the building. Kroon Hall, the new School of Forestry and & Environmental Studies at Yale sets a new and modern standard for sustainability on campus.

Kroon_Survey_analysis. Difference-in-Difference (DiD)-based analysis of user comfort in Yale's Kroon hall and surrounding buildings. Kroon Hall is a treasure trove of stunning features and sustainable technology, which were supported by donors to the project. Gilman Ordway ’47 established the building’s Ordway Learning Center, and Emily and Carl W. Knobloch, Jr., made a gift to create the Knobloch Environment Center. Kroon Hall is a truly sustainable building: a showcase of the latest developments in green building technology, a healthy and supportive environment for work and study, and a beautiful building that actively connects students, faculty, staff, and visitors with the natural world. Kroon Hall, the new home for the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, is charged with many ambitious goals: to be novel and inspiring while fitting in with its Neo-Gothic neighbors; to be timeless on a campus known for its icons; to be practical, indeed, the university's most efficient energy consumer; to provide a home for an academic department previously scattered throughout a Kroon Hall is part of a larger plan to systematically transform the social and physical environment of the surrounding science neighborhood.
